bears

The bear is a peculiar creature. Generally satisfied to live its life in peaceful pursuit of fish, berries, and even the odd carrion, it typically shies from interaction with Man insofar as it can. However, once provoked, they show that it is best to let sleeping bears lie; for they can make short work of even a well-trained knight with their bite and their claws. (1)(2)

mountain grizzly

Mountain grizzlies populate the forest on the west of the Velodyna River. Typically, they do not mind the presence of Man, but the occupation of Castrum Oriens by the Eorzean Alliance has led to increasing confrontations with the beasts. It is thought that it is the smell of the latrines which draws them--probably out of territorial instinct. Probably. (3)

Clan Centurio regularly issues bounties on the bears. (4)

(3) FATE: Unbearable
(4) Centurio hunt: Pantera

Habitats:
- The Fringes, Bittermill
- The Fringes, Castrum Oriens (FATE only)

Combat Rating: 61

Special notes:

The mountain grizzly is surprisingly fast with its claws for a beast so great. Its forehand strike is ferocious and can come directly in the wake of another slap, and it will occasionally make a wide swing before it, which flippant hunters call "the Killing Paw".
