THE BESTIARY

CLASSIFICATION OF BEINGS

All beings that are covered by the Raimdelle system are classed according to a number of divisions: kingdom, kinship, genera, species.

Kingdoms (also known as regnum, plural regna) are three simple divisions: Bloodborn, Bloodless, and Transcendent. Kinship (also known as class) is made into twelve "kindred" groupings within, based upon similarities of habitat or nature. Creatures are then divided into generae (genus), according to physical structures; within those, species, more precise divisions. (1)

The most complete bestiary in existence is the Raimdelle Codex, compiled by the naturalist Frandelont Raimdelle. His system of nomenclature--rather bluntly known as the Raimdelle taxonomic system--is the gold standard in the study of biology.  And well it is earned, as his object was to educate his fellow Eorzeans on the beauties of the natural world.

Raimdelle's good work has been taken up by scholars of Sharlayan, and they have expanded greatly upon it.  This humble offering before you, however, is a layman's guide to the creatures of our world, carefully reorganized to be readily accessible. (1)

THE BESTIARY,
BY CLASS

The Bloodborn regnum refers, unsurprisingly, to those creatures that are born, and are possessed of blood. Oddly, sap is counted as blood. Within this regnum are seven classes: Beastkin, Cloudkin, Scalekin, Seedkin, Vilekin, Wavekin, and Spoken. (1)

Though Raimdelle classifies Man under his Bestiary, it seems inappropriate in our modern era, particularly in light of treatment of those deemed "beastmen".  Spoken species will be covered in a separate book.

TRANSCENDENT

The Bloodless regnum encompasses all corporeal beings that do not possess blood: Ashkin, Forgekin, and Soulkin. (1)

The Transcendent regnum refers to those beings that are inherently foreign to the normal experiences of corporeal life. They are often worshipped, though they are not true deities. They include Elementals and Voidsent. (1)
