BATS

Bats are creatures of the night, preferring to spend daylight hours within caves and tree hollows. Their large, lamplike eyes are nigh blind, and they navigate by listening for the echoes of their shrieks. (1)

Though most bats prefer the sweet savor of fruit, many feed upon vilekin, or even the blood of beast and man. It is that last hunger that makes them into pests, for a bat's bite can transmit a terrible disease of madness. Their flittering movements, as well, make them difficult targets to strike. (2) (3)

BARBASTELLE

Barbastelle, the Laird of the Blind Iron Mines, is a very large and solitary creature. Called a "vampire bat', its thirst for blood is prodigious--enough to convince experts that it is the culprit behind the "Big Gulp", the slaying of an entire herd of sheep at the Red Rooster Stead.

As such, there is a generous reward for the slaying of Barbastelle--though any adventurer seeking it should be cautious. (4)

Barbastelle is a vampire bat, and will drain the blood of an attacker to heal itself.

CAVE BAT

The species that dwells in the Blind Iron Mines of Lower La Noscea is named, simply, "cave bat".

Though not generally hostile, some believe that the bite of these bats can transmit a disease that causes men to froth at the mouth and seek the blood of others. Better safe than sorry; young arcanists and rogues are often set to cull the cloudkin population, and when the bats emerge in droves from the mines, adventurers are asked to put them down. (3) (5) Blue mages also seek to learn the Blood Drain spell from them.
