ELEMENTALS

"Elemental" can refer to the defenders of the Twelveswood revered by the people of Gridania, or--as in this case--to the class of beings primarily defined by their being living aether. Indeed, these elementals are composed almost entirely of aether (usually with some small core or focus), though only some possess the ability to communicate or act of their own volition. This being the case, even arcanists' and summoners' creations are classed herein. (1)

SPRITES

For a long time, it was believed that sprites were in some way kin to the "true" elementals of the Black Shroud. However, much study has since shown that, while they are alike enough to be placed in the same class, they are not like the revered beings. (1)

There is, in fact, much debate whether sprites are actually living things at all, given that their very existence is dependent upon specific aetheric conditions. But for now, they are counted living things--if only on the level of beasts. (1)
